Dr Al-Issa’s humanitarian work goes beyond providing one-off relief, to building long-standing infrastructure. Support for the Ocean Viking has helped rescue over a thousand people from the Mediterranean; water security programmes have delivered close to 5,000 wells to communities across Somalia, Pakistan and beyond; and orphan care schemes provide tens of thousands of children in Egypt and Jordan with a monthly safety net. Alongside this sits a growing commitment to public health, from a global coalition to eliminate hepatitis to scholarship programmes training the doctors and midwives that vulnerable communities will need for decades to come.
